3D-Printed Jewelry Breathes New Life Into 64-Year-Old American Pearl
The International Business Times looked at how a family jeweler that had been in New York since 1950 used 3D printing to change the way it makes jewelry. American Pearl experimented with the technology for several years before adopting it fully in 2013.
The article walks through the process: a design is printed as a precise wax model, the wax is used to make a mold, and gold, silver or platinum is cast using the traditional lost-wax method. Because every design exists digitally until it is ordered, American Pearl can offer millions of combinations of rings, earrings and necklaces without holding them in stock.
