The commission

Every so often a client sees a design and knows exactly how they want it made. This one began with our Emperor drop earrings — and a request to build them in platinum, around two exceptional pear-shaped diamonds. What follows is the piece we are creating for them, made to order the way American Pearl and Diamond has worked since 1950.

The design: ribbons in motion

The Emperor drop is built to move. Slender ribbons arc down from each earring, their surfaces set edge to edge with pavé diamonds and centered by a single bezel-set stone. Beneath the ribbons, the pear-shaped drops are basket-set and joined so they swing freely, catching light with every turn of the head. From the top of the ear to the tip of the drop, it reads as one continuous ribbon of brilliance.

The diamonds: a matched pair of pears

At the heart of the commission are two pear-brilliant diamonds chosen as a matched pair — one for each earring. Both are graded D in color, the highest colorless grade, and VVS2 in clarity, with excellent polish and symmetry and a full GCAL grading report. Together they total just over four carats — roughly 2.05 and 2.04 carats each — measuring close to 11.3 by 7.1 millimeters: long, elegant pears that hang beautifully as drops.

The matched pair in 360° — left: the 2.05-carat pear; right: the 2.04-carat pear. Both D color, VVS2, and GCAL-certified.

Because the two stones are so closely matched in outline, proportion, and sparkle, the finished earrings mirror each other almost perfectly — the detail that separates a fine pair of drops from two diamonds that merely sit side by side.

Why platinum

Platinum was the natural choice for a white-diamond earring. It is naturally white, so it never needs re-plating to stay bright, and it holds a diamond with quiet strength — dense, durable, and hypoallergenic. Against D-color diamonds, platinum lets the stones read as white as they truly are.

Made to order

These earrings are being hand-built to order, the same way every American Pearl and Diamond commission is. The design can be tailored to you — a different diamond size or shape, a different metal, or a matched pair sourced to your budget and taste.
